_POSTCARD 2 FROM BERLIN: THE TIERGARTEN

The Tiergarten is an extremely large park in central Berlin and is mostly ‘natural’ in appearance but with areas that are manicured.  Advice received is that it started as a forested hunting area for the aristocracy but its more recent history includes that it was re-designed by Albert Speer at the request of Joseph Goebels as a birthday present for Adolph Hitler.

During WW2, it was heavily damaged and then after that time, the remaining trees were cut down for firewood during the harsh times that followed.  Most of the trees therefore, date back only about 60 years or so.

Today it is a gem in the urban fabric of Berlin.
